ACCA has received a certificate of merit from the Ministry of Finance in a ceremony to mark 20 years of operations in Vietnam.

The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) has received a certificate of merit from the Ministry of Finance for its contributions to the country's development in a ceremony to mark 20 years of operations in Vietnam.

Attended by government agencies and top organisations, the event in Hanoi on December 7 enabled key representatives to discuss avenues for further cooperation between the public and private sectors to improve transparency, build talent, and support globalisation of the finance and auditing sector in Vietnam.

At the ceremony, Deputy Minister of Finance Vo Thanh Hung presented the certificate of merit.

On receiving the honour, the ACCA's chief executive Helen Brand said, “We are delighted to receive this certificate today and express our thanks to the ministry (MoF). Together, we’ve made great advances and we look forward to continuing to collaborate and innovate to build Vietnam’s skilled finance profession of the future.”

The ACCA has contributed to the MoF in the process of drafting and guiding implementation of the Law on Independent Auditing, the Law on Accounting, and intensive training on international financial reporting standards (IFRS).

The association plays an important facilitating role in the region through strategic partnerships with universities such as the Foreign Trade University, the Academy of Finance, the National Economics University, and the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City.

It has also signed affiliations with the top four global accounting firms and other organisations such as Unilever and Standard Chartered Bank. These activities are helping universities update their educational programmes in line with evolving needs of private and public enterprises, while minimising the cost of international certificates, and opening access to more people, while enhancing the role of finance professionals in the global economic context.

Last week's ceremony also welcomed the first opportunity to deploy the Vietnamese version of the IFRS certificate. More than 5,000 students are currently studying in the ACCA programme, and 1,200 qualified finance professionals are recognised as ACCA members.

“The ACCA continues to establish itself as one of the leading global organisations for professional accountants. We strive to stay ahead of global developments and provide our members with the tools to become visionaries and future leaders,” said Ren Varma, the ACCA's cluster head of mainland Southeast Asia.
