AND PORTAL
In this environment, play is not just fun, but a key part of brain development, helping children’s natural curiosity and independence grow from the very beginning. The early years of a child’s life are crucial, as they shape how they learn and interact in the future. That's why every part of the ISHCMC Early Years programme is carefully planned to inspire, support, and challenge young learners.
Nurturing confidence and independence
From their first day, young learners at ISHCMC are intentionally encouraged to develop confidence and independence. Children are empowered to make choices, explore their interests, and build a strong sense of self. Niamh, an ISHCMC teacher, highlights, "Early Explorers provides children with a nurturing, trusting environment where open-ended play inspires curiosity, builds confidence, and encourages them to take risks, laying a strong foundation for lifelong learning." Whether it’s choosing a play station, initiating a collaborative project with peers, or confidently expressing their ideas, every opportunity is a step towards building resilience and self-reliance. Educators provide gentle encouragement, allowing children to take developmentally appropriate risks and discover their capabilities in a safe and supportive space.
The power of play-based learning
Play is recognised as the most effective and natural way for young children to learn. It's through engaged, imaginative play that children develop critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and a natural curiosity about the world around them. Teachers facilitate this play by observing, questioning, and subtly guiding children towards deeper insights and understandings. For instance, a simple block-building session might evolve into an exploration of engineering principles, while imaginative role-play could teach social dynamics and empathy. This isn't just free play, it's intentional, inquiry-driven play that fosters creativity, collaboration, and a joyful approach to discovery.
Environments that inspire learning
Learning environments at ISHCMC integrate Reggio-inspired principles with the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) framework. This powerful combination creates beautiful, stimulating spaces that act as a "third teacher", inviting exploration and fostering independence. Classrooms are designed for movement, exploration, and creativity, featuring natural light, open-ended materials, and flexible areas that adapt to children's interests. Here, teachers serve as responsive partners, carefully observing, listening deeply to children’s ideas, and then providing provocations that extend learning. As Leanne Le, ISHCMC PYP coordinator, affirms, "At ISHCMC, we don’t just offer an Early Years programme, we offer a foundation for life. Our approach is guided by global research, a deep respect for childhood, and decades of experience nurturing capable, compassionate learners.” This approach is profoundly empowering, fostering a sense of ownership over their learning journey rather than simply instructing, enabling agency to blossom from the earliest years.
New spaces for enhanced exploration
The upcoming new Early Explorers learning spaces, opening in 2025, are set to further enhance the commitment to world-class early childhood education. These purpose-built environments designed with the latest research in mind, will further enhance and offer even more opportunities for multisensory engagement, collaborative play, and connection with nature. These new facilities will embody calmness, natural elements, and thoughtful design, reflecting dedication to creating an optimal setting for early development. "We chose ISHCMC because we were deeply drawn to its educational philosophy, one that respects each child's natural curiosity and fosters a love of lifelong learning," shares Jiwoon Yoon, an ISHCMC parent, echoing the sentiments of many families who value this unique approach.
Graduates equipped for lifelong discovery
Ultimately, ISHCMC students leave early years as confident, curious, and compassionate learners. They enter primary school not only with foundational academic skills but also with strong social-emotional intelligence, a deep love for learning, and the ability to question, explore, and create.
As Kate, ISHCMC Primary principal states, "The school believes children are capable, curious, and full of potential, deserving to be heard, valued, and challenged. Our mission is to nurture their natural curiosity and inspire deep understanding through meaningful, hands-on learning. We don’t just teach children, we believe in them." Early years graduates are prepared not just for the next stage of schooling, but for a lifetime of inquiry, innovation, and global citizenship, carrying with them the joy and wonder instilled during their crucial early years.
To learn more about ISHCMC’s Early Years programme, we warmly invite parents to join our upcoming Open Days, taking place from 8:30 to 10:00 AM on the 14th, 21st, and 29th of August.
This is a great opportunity to connect with our educators and leadership team, ask questions, and gain deeper insights into what makes our programme unique. We look forward to welcoming you!
