Vietnam added to World Logistics Passport network

The World Logistics Passport (WLP) is a global initiative designed to address trade barriers and smoothen the flow of trade across the network. It is the world’s first logistics loyalty programme for traders and freight forwarders.

WLP focuses on addressing industry specific supply chain bottlenecks. WLP works with partners in 21 global hubs that consist of over 340 partners, to customise benefits that provide members with economic efficiencies that reduce costs, save time, and offer access to new market opportunities. Its mission is to increase bilateral trade and grow the economy of the countries within the network.

Commenting on the reason for choosing Vietnam as a hub, Abdulla Al Mulla, acting director of WLP, said, "Hubs are chosen based on their strategic location and shared interest in increasing global trade. Vietnam’s location is key to connecting Asia with the rest of the world. Vietnam is a strong manufacturing centre, particularly in electronics, textiles, and coffee. The pandemic has underscored this strength. Coupled with a government focused on promoting exports and a strategic coastline that supports robust logistics infrastructure, Vietnam stands out as a key partner in South Asia. WLP aims to help Vietnam unlock its trade potential and contribute to the vision of increasing its exports to the Middle East, Latin America, and beyond."

Under the supervision of the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the General Department of Vietnam Customs, in collaboration with the Vietnam Logistics Association, WLP is focusing on enhancing the logistics processes for key commodities such as textiles, cocoa, and coffee. To achieve this, WLP is forming partnerships with public sector entities, relevant associations, and service providers to streamline trade flows and contribute to Vietnam's economic growth.

Vietnamese traders stand to gain several benefits from participating in the WLP programme, including access to WLP's extensive global network of logistics partners, alongside cost savings and reduced shipping times for their goods.

In Dubai, Dubai Customs offers dedicated lanes and counters at their inspection centre in Terminal 2, Jebel Ali Freezone, specifically for WLP’s Platinum and Gold members. This has resulted in an average of 86 per cent quicker clearance times. Meanwhile, DP World offers WLP's members rebates on additional free storage days when they utilise their facilities. Last year, the collective annual savings accrued by WLP's members exceeded $650,000. These are just two examples out of over 500 benefits WLP's programme offers across its global network.

"The goal of WLP is to facilitate seamless international trade. The world currently faces several trade barriers. Our supply chains are vulnerable to external shocks, and our logistics journeys have various bottlenecks. Differing international policies and fragmented trade stakeholders all contribute to hindering economies' true potential. WLP aims to unite the public and private sectors to address these trade barriers and help boost global trade," Mulla said.

To showcase its initiative, WLP joined the Vietnamese International Logistics Exhibition (VILOG) 2024 from August 1 to 3. This is the second time WLP has participated in VILOG, which has proven to be an instrumental platform for strengthening existing partnerships and building new ones. Before the event, WLP signed an agreement with the Ho Chi Minh Logistics Association, and during VILOG, it continued to solidify its partnerships. WLP signed a letter of intent with the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Institution, as well as MoUs with WR1 Logistics and Vietnam Logistics & Aviation School.

These signings confirm that these organisations have officially joined the WLP network and will collaborate to boost Vietnamese trade. Today, WLP has over 37 partners in Vietnam. Meanwhile, WLP's Vietnam hub now offers 33 benefits, with more to come, reinforcing Vietnam’s importance in its network.
