Vietnam’s passport has gained new momentum on the global stage, reflecting the country’s growing international engagement and improvements in border security standards.
According to the Henley Passport Index (HPI) released on July 22, Vietnam’s passport rose seven places to rank 84th worldwide in the second quarter of 2025. This jump from 91st in the first quarter, and up three positions from 2024, reflects the country’s proactive foreign relations and recent upgrades in passport security and digitalisation.
This marks one of the strongest showings for Vietnam’s passport in recent years, matching its 2010 and 2025 position. The country’s highest historical ranking was 78th in 2006 and 2007.
Vietnam’s improved standing on respected global indices is expected to enhance the credibility of its tourism industry, attract foreign investment, and expand international cooperation, ultimately driving inbound tourism growth. Hoang Nhan Chinh, head of the Secretariat of the Vietnam Tourism Advisory Board, noted that passport rankings are considered a reflection of a country’s global integration and openness.
"Vietnam has also made technical improvements to its passport, including the introduction of e-passports with embedded chips in 2023 and the adoption of an automated immigration system aligned with international standards, enhancing trust among partner countries," said Chinh.
According to the latest HPI data, Vietnamese citizens can now travel to 51 destinations visa-free or with simplified entry procedures such as e-visas, visas on arrival, or electronic travel authorisations, out of a total of 227 destinations, maintaining the same level of access as earlier this year.
